Why Choose Sunset Cliffs for Your Elopement
One of the best reasons to elope here is the view! Sweeping ocean horizons, rugged cliffs, and glowing skies that seem to stretch on forever. No matter where you stand, you’re surrounded by the kind of natural beauty that takes your breath away.
And with San Diego’s consistently mild, sunny weather, you rarely have to worry about rain or extreme temperatures interfering with your day. It’s one of those rare locations that feels just as perfect in spring as it does in late fall.
Eloping at Sunset Cliffs lets you step away from the noise of tradition and simply focus on what matters most—each other. It’s quiet, intimate, and full of soft, unforgettable moments that will stay with you forever. And, as a San Diego Elopement Photographer, I can guarantee your photos will be absolutely stunning!

When to Elope at Sunset Cliffs
Spring (March-May)
Spring at Sunset Cliffs feels like something out of a painting. Wildflowers bloom along the trails, the skies are clear, and the ocean is a deep, glowing blue. It’s warm without being hot, and the cliffs are especially vibrant after the winter rains. There are less people especially in early Spring, so you don’t have to worry as much about crowds! We definitely recommend Spring.
Summer (June-August)
Sunset Cliffs is at its busiest in the summer, so you’ll very likely to have to work around surfers and tourists. Go for a weekday, and consider sunrise to avoid the crowds. Parking is also very limited, so be sure to arrive early – especially if you go for sunset. The weather is warmest in the summer, but the ocean breeze still keeps things cooler.
Fall (September-November)
Fall might be the best-kept secret in San Diego. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the summer crowds have thinned out, making it feel more private and peaceful. Sunset skies in the fall tend to be dramatic and full of rich, golden tones—perfect for capturing that soft, romantic glow in your photos. Fall is our Vote.
Winter (December-February)
Daytime California temps usually hang out in the 60s, sometimes even creeping into the 70s. This makes Sunset Cliffs one of the most consistent and reliable places in San Diego, even for a winter ceremony. Rain is more common in Winter, but overall, it’s still pretty rare. And these cliffs still have the most magical, golden sunsets. Once the sun dips down, that ocean breeze can get pretty chilly, so be sure to dress warm and bring layers!
Golden Hour is Everything
No matter what season you choose, aim for golden hour—about an hour before sunset. The way the light pours over the cliffs and reflects off the ocean creates the most ethereal, warm ambiance. It’s a magical time to say your vows and soak in the beauty of the moment together.
Days to Avoid
Weekends can be especially busy, especially in summer. If privacy is important to you, consider a weekday elopement, ideally Tuesday through Thursday, when the cliffs are much quieter.
And if you pick a busier time, be sure to leave early for good parking. The lots are small, and the street parking fills up quick, too.

Ceremony Locations at Sunset Cliffs
Sunset Cliffs stretches along the edge of Point Loma with multiple breathtaking spots, each offering a unique backdrop for your vows. Whether you’re drawn to dramatic overlooks or tucked-away corners, there’s a perfect place waiting for your love story.
Luscomb’s Point
This is one of the most iconic spots along Sunset Cliffs—and for good reason. The rocky outcroppings, expansive ocean views, and golden sunlight make it an unforgettable place to say “I do.” It’s ideal for couples who want a cinematic setting with space for a small group of guests.
Osprey Point
A little more secluded than Luscomb’s, Osprey Point offers a peaceful vibe with slightly more privacy. It’s surrounded by rugged cliffs and often less crowded, making it perfect for couples looking for intimacy and quiet moments. The light here is warm and glowy, especially at golden hour.
Pappy’s Point
Tucked away between the more well-known locations, Pappy’s Point has a wild, untouched feel to it. Think windswept cliffs, tide pools, and a soft soundtrack of waves below. This location is dreamy for couples who want something a little less expected and full of coastal charm.
The Trails and Bluffs
You don’t have to pick a “named” spot—some of the most magical elopements happen along the winding trails or on a random bluff with the sun setting just right. Sometimes the best location is the one that feels right in the moment. That’s the beauty of eloping here—you get to wander, explore, and choose the view that speaks to your hearts.

Travel Plans for a San Diego Wedding
Airport
The most convenient airport for reaching Sunset Cliffs is San Diego International Airport (SAN). Upon arrival, you can easily rent a car or use ride-sharing services to reach your destination.

An Airbnb: To do California in style, consider one of these incredible homes right on the coast! View sunset cliffs from the comfort of your couch or front porch. I’m obsessed with this one.

How to Legally Elope at Sunset Cliffs
1. Get Your California Marriage License
You’ll need a marriage license issued by any California county. If you’re coming from out of town, the San Diego County Clerk’s office is the most convenient option. No waiting period is required, so you can even get your license and elope the same day—though giving yourself a little extra time is always a good idea.
- Both partners must be present and have a valid photo ID.
- You must obtain a marriage license before having a ceremony.
- The license is valid for 90 days.
- After the license is registered, you may purchase a copy of your marriage certificate (proof of marriage). One will not automatically be sent to you.
- Appointments are required. Schedule your appointment before submitting the Marriage License Online Application. Or fill out the Marriage License Printable Application and bring it with you.
Here’s the link to the San Diego County Clerk’s Office for the most up-to-date info.
2. Choose an Officiant
California law requires an officiant to legally marry you (self-solemnization isn’t allowed). Your officiant can be:
- A professional officiant
- A religious leader
- A friend or family member ordained online
Having someone meaningful officiate your ceremony can add a personal touch, especially for intimate elopements like this. The San Diego County Deputy Marriage Commissioner for a Day program offers a way for a friend or relative to be deputized to perform their wedding ceremony. This does require a fee and your loved one must fill out an application one month before your wedding.
3. Bring a Witness
You’ll need one witness to sign your marriage license. This can be a friend, a family member, or even your photographer—yes, I’ve signed quite a few licenses for my couples!
If you want a truly private ceremony with no guests at all, you can also bring a second vendor (like a videographer or planner) to serve as a witness.
4. Do You Need a Permit to Elope at Sunset Cliffs?
For small elopements without setup (like chairs, arches, or amplified sound), or if you’re just taking portraits without a ceremony, a permit may not be required. But it’s always best to double-check with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. If you’re bringing guests or plan to set anything up for your ceremony, you’ll need a park use permit. All of the Sunset Cliffs shoreline parks (Osprey Point, Pappy’s Point and Luscomb’s Point) require an event permit ($187+) to have an elopement ceremony, even for just the two of you! You can find more info via the San Diego City Parks Department: Phone: 619.235.1122 / WEBSITE.
Applications should be submitted at least 15 calendar days in advance for a standard permit and 30 calendar days for permits with special requirements.

Tips for a Meaningful Elopement Experience at Sunset Cliffs
Eloping at Sunset Cliffs is about more than just the views—it’s about creating a moment that feels honest, heartfelt, and completely yours. Here are a few gentle suggestions to help make your day feel intentional and deeply meaningful.
Take Your Time
Even if your ceremony is short and sweet, don’t rush. Let yourselves linger in the moment. Watch the waves roll in. Hold hands a little longer. Soak in the golden light. Your elopement doesn’t need to follow a strict timeline—allow space for quiet, for laughter, for breath.
Write Personal Vows
This is your love story—raw and real. Sunset Cliffs is the perfect setting to share personal vows, surrounded by nature’s beauty and the sound of the ocean. Even if you’re shy, a few heartfelt words spoken from the heart can become your favorite memory of the day.
Add Small, Sentimental Touches
Bring something that feels special to you—maybe a handwritten letter, a small heirloom, or a favorite poem. Some couples bring a cozy blanket for a post-ceremony picnic or champagne to toast as the sun dips below the horizon. It doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful.
Consider an Adventure Session
If you’re already making your way to Sunset Cliffs for your elopement, why not stretch the experience a little longer? You could explore the nearby cliffs, take a slow stroll along the beach, or sneak away for sunset portraits. These little adventures often become the most treasured part of the day.
Hire a Photographer Who Feels Like a Friend
You’ll want someone who blends in seamlessly, who notices the quiet in-between moments, and who helps you feel fully present—never posed or pressured. The right photographer will document the emotions, movement, and light in a way that brings you back to this exact feeling every time you look at your images.
